Carry-on Baggage Restrictions

Guests are permitted to carry liquids, aerosols, and/or gels (with caps) in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. All containers must fit comfortably inside a single 1 litre transparent, completely sealed, re-sealable plastic bag. This bag must be presented separately at the security screening point.

These restrictions apply to (but are not limited to) the following items:

  • Beverages and food (in sauce/liquid form)
  • Shampoo and soap
  • Perfume and deodorant
  • Cream, lotion and oil
  • Paste, including toothpaste
  • Lip balm, lip gloss and lip stick
  • Hair gel, hair spray or other items of a similar consistency

Virgin Australia recommends that all other liquids, aerosols and gels, in excess of this allowance, be placed in checked baggage prior to check-in. Guests will not be permitted past the security screening point with liquids, aerosols and gels in excess of the amounts stipulated above – nor will they be able to access their checked baggage after check-in.

Note: Exceptions will be made for guests with medical conditions (supporting documentation may be required) and quantities of baby food required for the flight. These items may be subject to additional security checks.

Note: Guests may take items purchased at the airport after the security screening point onboard. All guests transiting through Australia and New Zealand are advised to purchase Duty Free goods after the transit screening point.

Note: All guests passing through an international security screening point will be subject to random and continuous frisk searches.

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels

Liquids, aerosols and gels are only permitted through international security checkpoints in restricted quantities. For further details please refer to Enhanced Security Measures.

What is Not Allowed

Sharps

Some countries do not allow sharp objects, such as scissors, nail files and pocket knives, to be taken through airport security screening points. Sharps detected by security screening will be confiscated. We recommend guests place these items in their checked baggage prior to check-in.

These restrictions do not apply to guests who require syringes for medical use (e.g. diabetics). Aviation security measures allow for these items to be carried onboard an aircraft after they have been screened.

Weapons

Items that have the potential to be used as a weapon – as determined by Virgin Australia ground crew or security personnel – may not be permitted past airport security screening.

Inflatable Items

All inflatable items must be deflated before they are permitted as carry-on baggage. Inflated items must travel in the hold of the aircraft as checked baggage. This includes inflated sports balls (i.e. footballs and basketballs).

Bulky Carry-on Baggage

Virgin Australia may accept bulky or fragile items above the standard carry-on baggage size, such as large musical instruments or diplomatic baggage, to be carried in the aircraft cabin. Guests may need to purchase an additional seat to accommodate these items.

Note: Virgin Australia requires a minimum of 15 days notice, prior to the day of travel, for bulky cabin items to be approved for carriage. For further information please contact the Guest Contact Centre.

Interline and Codeshare Partners

Carry-on baggage allowances for flights with our Interline and Codeshare partners will depend on the operating carrier’s policies for each sector. Please contact the operating carrier for your flight for further details.
