Detroit, USABest known as the world's automotive birthplace and epicenter, Detroit is a metonym for both the US auto industry and popular music legacies. Affectionately described by the city's two familiar nicknames; ‘The Motor City’ and ‘Motown’, Detroit is a melting pot of old meets new.

Currently undergoing a renaissance with new developments and attractions, downtown Detroit’s development boom is unparalleled in the country and was recently named ‘Best Big City Neighborhood’ to live in America.

Shopping

Metro Detroit offers approximately 150 shopping centres, 23 of which are mega-malls in excess of 500,000 square feet. Major shopping districts are also located in Birmingham, Grosse Pointe, Northville, Royal Oak, Mount Clemens, Plymouth and Ferndale. If you're looking for the finest brands, head straight to The Somerset Collection in Troy, which attracts thousands of shoppers daily to its upscale stores and boutiques, such as Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co., Crate & Barrel, Nordstrom, Cartier, Saks Fifth Avenue and Gucci.

Novi's Twelve Oaks Mall boasts 1.5 million square feet of shopping space and 20 retailers, including Lord & Taylor, Macy's and Michigan's only Martin+ Osa. The Mall at Partridge Creek in Clinton Township is an open-air shopping centre (don't let that scare you away in the winter -- the mall features heated sidewalks and a 30-foot fireplace) anchored by Parisian and Nordstrom. In addition to a large number of shops and stores, it includes unique amenities such as the previously mentioned fireplace, bocce ball courts and a dog-friendly atmosphere.

For value shopping with a dose of sophistication, check out the Great Lakes Crossing outlet mall in Auburn Hills, where you'll find discount stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue's Off 5th, Bass Pro Outdoor World and Neiman Marcus Last Call.
